The NCE Plus web site is the online presence for the New Civil Engineering magazine. The site - and the magazine - are both owned and operated by the international media company, EMAP.
Originally, when the site was launched it was based around a subscription model - but more recently the site owners have decided to allow free access to the site. This really is a positive move for the industry as the depth of information contained within the site is immense - and as well as reporting the news there is also a good deal of editorial that is both insightful and often particularly topical and relevant too.
The site itself has a permanently accessible search facility, providing access to the extensive article archive. The careers link takes visitors through to a section, which has links to NCEinsite (a magazine about engineering for school students), training and university courses, and leading UK company career profiles - as well as providing a link through to Careers in Construction. This is the EMAP Construct web site for job advertising, and has feeds into it from other sister sites and publications, such as QS Week, Architects Journal, Construction News, etc. - so can provide a quite comprehensive and diverse range of jobs.
But NCE Plus is not solely about jobs - as it contains a significant quantity of useful knowledge, relevant to the industries it serves. There are sections that focus on events and conferences, as well as providing a range of directories - covering companies, contractors, consultants and products.
There is also a further knowledge section that not only has its own easy to use search facility, but also is categorised into issues (roads, rail, disasters, tube, flooding, water, structures, energy, waste) and projects (CTRL, Heathrow T5, Wembley Stadium, etc.) - the quantity and quality of the information available is superb.
The site itself has a clean and clear (uncluttered) design, which makes accessing each of the features an easy task. So, along with the knowledge sections, directories, and various other links - and of course, the news and the immediacy of it (including a free daily email newsletter service) - make this site a valuable addition to any web portfolio.
