PROFESSIONAL PROFILES:

Christine Houlton – Senior Business Consultant

I started work…

In the Customer Service Department at Barclaycard after leaving school at 16 with O-Levels. Working my way through various departments up to Implementation Planning Manager, I was made redundant after 20 years and moved to a small independent GIS Consultancy. I worked as an Office Manager here wearing a variety of hats, from HR through to Facilities Manager.

I joined MWH because…

I saw this as an opportunity to grow my career within a large and diverse global organisation, and this has certainly been the case. Six years ago I joined MWH as an Admin Team Leader and, since joining, I progressed into a facilitation role and now work within Business Solutions as a Senior Business Consultant on various projects and workshops.

The best part of my job is…

The variety of my role, and the opportunity to work with such a wide range of clients. Currently I am working on projects involving stakeholder engagement, business process mapping and change management.

The best thing about working for MWH is…

MWH has a fantastic ‘caring’ culture, which is underlined by their HR processes. This includes initiatives such flexible working hours, global knowledge communities and even the smaller things - like our recycling initiatives and fair trade tea and coffee. It is also reflected in the people here – I don’t know how they manage it, but everyone at MWH is friendly and supportive and there is always a great exchange of ideas.

Projects I am working on at the moment…

Recently I have facilitated workshops for a number of large clients including Northumbrian Water, Scottish Water, National Grid and the NDA. Workshops have been on a number of topics including risk management, team building, value management and project workshops.

Where do you see your career and MWH going in the future?

All I want from my job is to be involved in interesting work that stretches me all the time and I feel that it is testament to MWH, as I have been here for six years. I have constantly been stretched and given new opportunities, and with the current growth the organisation is going through, I see no reason for this to end.

Gary Ryder – Senior Project and Commercial Manager

I started work…

Over 30 years ago, I started work at George Wimpey and Company as a Junior Site Engineer based in their Manchester office. They allowed me day release to study for my ONC and HNC at Wigan Technical College and also provided me with three months full time training at their training school in London. This was a great experience and overall the training provided was first class.

I moved after five years to Bolton Metropolitan Borough Council working in their main drainage section where I gained great experience and worked with some very talented engineers - a few of whom I still work with today. Before joining MWH, I worked for North West Water and Bechtel, based in their Design & Construction teams. My most recent role was managing the close down phase of United Utilities £2.5 billion pound asset management programme - which was an enormously exciting and rewarding opportunity.

I joined MWH because…

I transferred from Bechtel to MWH because they were successful in winning the United Utilities AMP3 programme and, from the start, I really enjoyed the whole set up and ethos - so much so I have now been with MWH for eight years.

The best part of my job is…

Working on exciting programmes, delivering complex projects and working with people who come up with great solutions.

The best thing about working for MWH is…

The opportunities that the company can offer to all staff, regardless of career level or specialisation. It is not uncommon for staff to move all over the world, working on great projects and experiencing new cultures and lifestyles.

Projects I am working on at the moment…

Traditionally MWH is recognised for providing design services for water clients, however MWH has provided programme and project management services to clients all around the world for a number of years and 30% of all our work is programme based. Some of those we provide these services are the Nuclear, Health, Defence Transport and Power Sectors.

Where do you see your career and MWH going in the future?

I see MWH going from strength to strength. When I joined, MWH had approximately 4,000 staff now we have nearly 7,000 and I see this number growing despite the shortage of engineers and the credit crunch. On a personal level, I am enjoying my current role helping to develop a new Business Unit but the one thing you can rely on with MWH is there is always a new opportunity just around the corner.

Nick Gill – Principal Environmental Scientist

I started work…

After finishing my degree in Life Science & Environmental Pollution, and working voluntarily for a small period of time as a Countryside Ranger, I decided to go back to university and study for a post-graduate qualification in Rural Resource (Land Management and Conservation).

After graduating I had a number of jobs in all various areas of environmental work including working for UK Waste as a trade waste auditor, working as an Environmental Co-ordinator and a Group Environmental Manager for a growing food manufacturing company and even testing chocolate as a Lab Technician.

All these roles allowed me to gain experience in PPC (pollution prevention & control) and new EP (environmental permitting), waste and water and energy efficiency as well as other areas.

I joined MWH because…

Two years ago I joined MWH as a Principal Environmental Scientist. My previous role was working within a small office environment with a team of just 6 people, and I felt there was no real progression there. MWH offered an opportunity to work on different projects for different clients and I saw this as a great opportunity to progress my career.

The best part of my job is…

Developing the people around me, I have the opportunity and the autonomy to grow my own business area in Compliance & Planning and develop new products for clients.

The best thing about working for MWH is…

The people – I spend every day with like-minded people who are passionate about their work.

Projects I am working on at the moment…

Currently I am working on a variety of projects for a wide range of different clients, all with different needs. An example of how diverse things are at the moment is that I am working on PPC permits for many organisations within the water industry, looking at energy efficiency projects for a major government body, and facilitating Due Diligence audits for global industry clients.

Where do you see your career and MWH going in the future…

I envisage growing NBE and increasing our portfolio of services to clients. We are already on the way, but I want to be part of our growth in becoming a dominant force within the environmental consultancy sector.
