Principal Power Systems Engineer � Based in Manchester � Permanent Position - Salary Neg � Degree qualified � Ideally C-Eng

Brief Summary of Position:

The position is for a principal engineer to provide power system planning, design and studies services, directly interfacing with clients to meet their requirements, and fulfill the agreed scope of work to programme and to budget. This includes the preparation of well written reports and clear communication of issues and results.
The role also requires the principal engineer to take responsibility for technical quality of deliverables, provide technical leadership and assist with the training and development of less experienced staff. The principal engineer will be expected to develop and maintain client relationships, and to assist with identifying, bidding and winning new work.

Experience:

Proven experience in two or more of the following technical areas:-

Distribution power system planning and design
Transmission power system planning and design
Power system modeling, load flow and fault level studies
Developing generator controller models and transient stability analysis
Development and assessment of grid codes and planning and connection standards
Industrial power system design, including technical and cost assessment of options
Experience of specifying key electrical equipment parameters

Proven experience in most of the following areas:-

Successful management of projects to time, to budget and to client satisfaction
Providing technical lead on projects and proposals
Training, developing and mentoring other engineers
Checking and peer reviewing the work of other engineers
Developing and maintaining client relationships
Bidding and winning work
Clear articulation of complex issues to clients in both written and oral form.

Experience in any of the following areas will be an advantage:-

Transmission and/or distribution equipment design, application, installation and operation
Harmonic measurements, analysis and quality of supply issues
Lightning and switching surge studies
Protection system design and setting calculations
Earthing system design and studies
Load forecasting and generation planning
Generator controller response measurements and validation of models
HVDC system modeling and studies
Small signal stability analysis
Research and innovation in the power systems field
Publication of papers in English at conferences or in peer reviewed journals
Contribution to relevant professional bodies and societies

Ideally the experience will have been gained in a non-academic environment.

Strong analytical capability with a thorough and accurate approach
Excellent IT skills, with a working knowledge of Word, Excel and Outlook.
Must be fully fluent and able to work (communicate verbally and in writing) in English.
Good interpersonal skills and experience of working with a wide range of people
Ability to organize themselves and others, working to deadlines and prioritizing workload
Willingness to develop into a broader range of work
Flexibility to work in different roles for different clients both locally and worldwide
