Responsible for the development and management of specific facility safety cases and the production of safety documentation within the Research and Applied Science Organisational Area (OA). The role requires support to Facility Managers, Project Managers and experiment designers. The role also ensuring corporate policy and standards adequately account for OA business activities and requirements, both internal and external stakeholder management and reviewing technical documentation

Key accountabilities
Manage existing safety documents and inputs/outputs from safety cases of high hazard facilities (e.g. involving radiological, nuclear and chemical plant)
Manage the production of safety documentation to meet licensing and experimental requirements
Ensure safety documentation is fit for purpose

Responsibilities
Management of in-house and consultancy resource in support of the production of deliverables are to the required time, cost and technical standard
Ensure that appropriate advice and guidance is given to Facility Managers and other Stakeholders on their Safety Documentation programme, strategy and requirements
Provide advice to facilities and projects as to the most appropriate safety documentation strategies
Liaise with external regulators, including the Nuclear Installations Inspectorate, on safety documentation matters in support of Facilities
Interaction at all levels with other departments
Responsible for own work and seeing that the product meets with the expectation of all stakeholders
Understand and maintain up to date in-house and industry standards and techniques
Review documents produced by consultancies and report and advise on adequacy of documents to Company and national standards
Financial management within agreed budget limits

Qualifications
Degree (or equivalent) in a science or engineering based subject, or equivalent experience
Modern project management qualification preferred
Knowledge
Substantial knowledge of health and safety legislation in an industrial or nuclear industry context
Substantial knowledge of safety case menus and methodologies to modern industry standards
Nuclear Licensing
Risk assessment techniques
Human factors integration into design and safety processes, and assessment techniques
Engineering Substantiation requirements
Safety and environmental management requirements
Working knowledge of UK environmental law is preferred

Experience
Significant experience of managing safety documentation is essential
Significant experience of safety documentation project management is essential
Significant experience of managing multi-disciplined teams in a matrix environment is essential
Significant experience of the delivery and application of fit for purpose safety arguments in line with business and programme requirements
Extensive health and safety experience on a nuclear licensed site is preferred
Demonstrable leadership and influencing skills essential
Working in a scientific community is preferred
